Chinese tourists increase Japanese beauty export sales

Japanese cosmetic exports in 16 categories, such as lipstick and hair care, rose 48 percent to 343.3 billion yen ($3.06 billion) in the January-August period, a rise attributed to Asian tourists, with China leading the pack, according to a review by Nikkei Asian Review.

Chinese tourists are said to be purchasing Japanese beauty products and staying loyal to the brands once returning home, with other Asian markets also helping to boost sales. Hong Kong made up quarter of the sum, followed by South Korea and Taiwan.

Singapore and Thailand tourists were also part of the rise, with the increase in sales boosted by Beijing lowering the tariff rates on a range of cosmetic products down from 8 percent to 2 percent.
