FDA’s Gottlieb: ‘CBD legislation could take years’

The Commissioner of the US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), Scott Gottlieb has admitted that it could take up to three years to pass legislation purporting to regulate the burgeoning CBD industry, according to a report published by Natural Products Insider.

Gottlieb, who announced his intention to step down as Commissioner earlier this month, hopes to set up a working group on CBD this week, which will look into alternative routes to regulate the industry in the absence of legislation.

“Commissioner Gottlieb should be applauded for his effort to set out an approach toward a pathway for hemp,” Jessica Wasserman, Partner at Greenspoon Marder told Natural Products Insider. “The questions is whether momentum will continue without his leadership at FDA.”
