Mecca Founder Jo Horgan has been won the EY Entrepreneur of the year award having been acknowledged for her entrepreneurial spirit in a Sydney-based ceremony.
Horgan runs Mecca Cosmetics and Mecca Maxima and was recognised for growing the group’s business in the face of competition such as Sephora entering the Australian market. It’s the first time the national award has gone to a female recipient since its inception in 2001.
Talking to Fairfax Media, Horgan said, “It gives me confidence that I’m on the right track, and every last piece of confidence is a gift. There were two motivators for me. The first was the Mecca team, and the second was that so that women entrepreneurs all around Australia can see it is possible to get to the absolute pinnacle of their industries and get recognised for it.”
Horgan has grown the business into an empire with 95 stores across Australia and New Zealand with a multi-million turnover. The brand portfolio includes three different retail store brands: Mecca, Mecca Maxima and Mecca Cosmetica as well as an e-store.
Serial entrepreneur Ryan Trainor was part of the EY judging panel and stated, “Jo is just an exceptional entrepreneur on many levels. This recognition is really well founded for her.
“You’ve got a business in a highly competitive area, you’ve had major global retailers try to enter, you’ve got the emergence of online.
“And in the defining moments where she has been challenged by these different exterior challenges…the way Jo has been so single-minded, it’s a truly inspiring Australian story. I think this is a great platform for it to be told.”
