Walmart has announced the appointment of Suresh Kumar as its new Chief Technology Officer in a bid to boost its e-commerce business amidst an internal technology transformation plan.
Prior to his appointment, Kumar most recently held the position of VP and General Manager of display, video, app ads and analytics at Google. Kumar has held numerous leadership roles at the likes of Amazon and Microsoft Corp, and will report to Walmart’s Chief Executive Doug McMillion in his new role.
The appointment signals a time of change for the retailer as it makes huge investments in its online enterprise in a bid to compete with the likes of e-commerce giant Amazon.
Speaking in a press release, McMillon said, “Suresh has a unique understanding of the intersection of technology and retail, including supply chain, and has deep experience in advertising, cloud, and machine learning. He has a track record of working in partnership with business teams to drive results.”
As part of his role Kumar will be responsible for the U.S. while also overseeing the company’s global technology developments, which includes the warehouse club chain, Sam’s Club.
